Planning a diving holiday in Marsa Alam

Between El Quseir and Hamata, you’ll dive from a base, usually at the house reef from the jetty or beach, and on certain days from a day boat. The day boats depart from Port Ghalib, the port of Marsa Alam, and Hamata. In Abu Dabbab Bay, you can walk from the beach to the seagrass meadow, where green sea turtles graze and, if you’re lucky, a dugong. At Sha’ab Samadai, the inner lagoon belongs exclusively to spinner dolphins. A constant current flows over the Elphinstone plateaus, and oceanic whitetip sharks visit in autumn. You can only reach Daedalus, Rocky Island, Zabargad, and St. John’s by safari boat, which usually departs from Port Ghalib.

This booklet helps you plan your week. The base’s weekly schedule shows how boat trips and house reef dives are spread across the days, with a plan B if the boat cannot sail due to the weather. The last day before your return flight is reserved for travel. The section on the time of year lists water and air temperatures, wind, visibility, crowds, and special highlights, so you can choose your dates before booking your flights and accommodation.

You’ll receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print at home as a booklet.

Depths, currents and entries change. The guide does not replace a briefing on site or your training.
