Plan a diving holiday in Bali and the Gili Islands
In Tulamben on Bali’s east coast, you walk from the shore to the Liberty, a US Army transport ship that ran aground there after being hit by a torpedo in 1942. When Mount Agung erupted in 1963, the wreck slid off the beach. In nearby Amed, you dive from the shore or from a jukung, the traditional boat used by local fishermen. After Nusa Penida, you continue on to Sanur. The waters around the island are a marine protected area in the province of Bali, where you do not touch or feed the manta rays and sunfish. To the Gili Islands, which are part of Lombok, you take a speedboat from Serangan or Padang Bai, and diving there is done from the boat.
This booklet helps you plan your week. Sample itineraries group dive sites into days, each with a Plan B in case the wind changes. The last day before your return flight is kept dive-free, and there are suggestions for how to spend it. The section on choosing the time of year lists water and air temperatures, wind, visibility, crowds, and special events, so you can set your dates before booking your flight and accommodation.
You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print out as a booklet at home.
