Dive sites in Bali and the Gili Islands
In Tulamben on Bali’s east coast, you walk from the shore to the Liberty, a US Army transport ship that ran aground there after being hit by a torpedo in 1942. When Mount Agung erupted in 1963, the wreck slid off the beach. In nearby Amed, you dive from the shore or from a jukung, the local fishermen’s boat. After Nusa Penida, you head over from Sanur. The waters around the island are a Bali provincial marine protected area, where you do not touch or feed the mantas and sunfish. To the Gilis, which are part of Lombok, you take a speedboat from Serangan or Padang Bai, and diving there is done from the boat.
This booklet is for your days in the water. At the beginning, a map shows all the shore dive sites, and each site description tells you how to access it from the shore and where to park. The compass rose shows which wind conditions make a site unsuitable. A table at the end of the chapter lists the remaining dive sites. The chapter Diving in Bali and the Gili Islands explains the conditions throughout the year, which coast is suitable for which wind, and the local regulations. Typical species are shown with an actual photo and their season.
You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print out as a booklet at home.
