Planning a diving vacation at the Great Barrier Reef

Safari boats depart for the Ribbon Reefs from Trinity Wharf in Cairns, and on the short trip aboard the Spirit of Freedom, the Cod Hole with its large potato cod is always included. The return journey is then by light aircraft from Lizard Island. From Port Douglas, the Quicksilver day boat takes you to the Agincourt Reef at the edge of the continental shelf. Further south off Cape Bowling Green lies the Yongala, which sank in a cyclone in 1911. Yongala Dive departs from Alva Beach near Ayr in just over half an hour and requires at least an Advanced Open Water certification. Diving into the wreck is prohibited.

With this booklet, you plan the week. The base's weekly schedule shows how boat trips and dives at the house reef are spread over the days, with a plan B if the boat does not sail due to the weather. The last day before the return flight remains dive-free. The travel period section lists water and air temperatures, wind, visibility, crowds, and special features by month, so you can set the date before booking your flight and accommodation.

You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print as a booklet at home.

Depths, currents and entries change. The guide does not replace a briefing on site or your training.
