Dive sites at the Great Barrier Reef
Safaribarges to the Ribbon Reefs depart from Trinity Wharf in Cairns, and on the short trip aboard Spirit of Freedom, the Cod Hole with its large potato cod is always included. The return journey is by light aircraft from Lizard Island. From Port Douglas, the Quicksilver day boat takes you to the Agincourt Reef at the edge of the continental shelf. Further south, off Cape Bowling Green, lies the Yongala, which sank in a cyclone in 1911. Yongala Dive takes you out from Alva Beach near Ayr in just over half an hour and requires at least an Advanced Open Water certification. Diving inside the wreck is prohibited.
This booklet is for the days spent in the water. At the beginning, a map shows all the portrait sites. Each portrait lists the port from which the boat departs, along with the travel time, or the house reef where you enter from the shore. A table at the end of the chapter lists the remaining dive sites. What conditions and winds to expect throughout the year and which regulations apply are explained in the chapter Diving at the Great Barrier Reef. Typical species are shown with an actual photo and their season.
You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print as a booklet at home.
