Diving sites on El Hierro
The dive bases on El Hierro are located in the port town of La Restinga at the southern tip. From there, boats sail into the Mar de las Calmas, which has been a Natura 2000 area since 2011. Part of it is the Reserva Marina Punta de La Restinga, where diving is only done from a boat at a buoy. Anyone diving there needs a permit, bases get them for one calendar year, and the core zone is completely closed to divers. Before La Restinga, the Tagoro volcano erupted underwater in 2011. After El Hierro, you fly from Tenerife Norte or Gran Canaria, the ferry sails from Los Cristianos on Tenerife to La Estaca.
This booklet is for the days in the water. At the beginning, a map shows all the dive sites. Each dive site lists the port from which the boat departs, with the travel time, or the house reef where you enter from the shore. The remaining dive sites are organized in a table at the end of the chapter. What conditions and wind to expect throughout the year and which regulations apply are explained in the chapter Diving on El Hierro. Typical species are shown in the marine life section with an actual photo and season.
You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print as a booklet at home.
