Travel to El Hierro and travel information

The dive bases on El Hierro are located in the port town of La Restinga at the southern tip. From there, boats head into the Mar de las Calmas, which has been a Natura 2000 area since 2011. Part of it is the Reserva Marina Punta de La Restinga, where diving is only allowed from a boat at a buoy. If you want to dive there, you need a permit, which dive bases obtain for one calendar year, and the core zone is completely closed to divers. In 2011, the Tagoro volcano erupted underwater off La Restinga. After El Hierro, you fly from Tenerife Norte or Gran Canaria, and the ferry runs from Los Cristianos on Tenerife to La Estaca.

This booklet is for the trip to El Hierro and getting around locally. It lists flights from German-speaking countries, the airlines' rules for scuba gear, and the transfer from the airport to your accommodation or dive base. In the travel information, you will go through documents and insurance, health, equipment, packing list, money, and phone numbers in turn. Land and people explains history and local customs, and how to pronounce the most important place names.

You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print as a booklet at home.

Depths, currents and entries change. The guide does not replace a briefing on site or your training.

Researched and compiled by a divemaster.
