Diving sites in Costa Rica

Isla del Coco lies far out in the Pacific, a UNESCO National Park and World Heritage Site where schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks pass by the cliffs and islets. Divers reach it aboard a safari boat departing from Puntarenas and dive from a tender. Closer to the coast lies Isla del Caño off the Osa Peninsula. As a biological reserve, it only allows a limited number of divers, with day boats departing from Drake Bay, Sierpe, Uvita, and Dominical. Humpback whales from both hemispheres come to these waters to mate and give birth to their calves.

This booklet is for your days in the water. At the beginning, a map shows all the dive sites. Each dive site lists the port from which the boat departs, along with the travel time, or the house reef where you enter the water from the shore. The remaining dive sites are organized in a table at the end of the chapter. What to expect throughout the year in terms of conditions and wind, and which regulations apply, is explained in the Diving in Costa Rica chapter. Typical species are shown with an actual photo and their season.

You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while on the go and print as a booklet at home.

Depths, currents and entries change. The guide does not replace a briefing on site or your training.

Researched and compiled by a divemaster.
