Travel to the Galápagos and travel information

Darwin and Wolf lie far to the north of the Galápagos, and you can only get there by safari boat. Day boats departing from Santa Cruz stay at sites around the central islands, such as Gordon Rocks. The safari boats usually depart from Baltra or San Cristóbal, and their itinerary is determined by their permit issued by the park authorities. Swarms of hammerhead sharks gather around Darwin and Wolf, and one study found more fish biomass there than at any other reef examined to date, especially sharks. Since 2016, fishing has been banned around both islands. The arch off Darwin has been reduced to its pillars since 2021.

This booklet is for your trip to the Galápagos and your journey aboard. It covers flights from German-speaking countries, the airlines’ rules for scuba gear, and the journey from the airport to the port of departure. The travel information section guides you through documents and insurance, health, equipment, packing lists, money, and phone calls. The land and people section explains the history and local customs, and how to pronounce the most important place names.

You will receive an A5-format PDF that you can read on your phone or tablet while traveling and print as a booklet at home.

Depths, currents and entries change. The guide does not replace a briefing on site or your training.

Researched and compiled by a divemaster.
